5 options to becoming MSC428 (98) compliant. Option 3. Classification Society – Cyber Secure Class Notation
MSC 428(98) from January 1st has taken effect. Depending on the anniversary date of your Document of Compliance (DOC) you may have some months before you are required to demonstrate compliance. Each day this week we will highlight ways in which you can easily show the auditor that your Company complies.
3. Classification Society – Cyber Secure Class Notation
What is it?
A number of Classification Societies are providing additional cyber secure class notations. These are typically based on the international technical standard IEC and have been adapted for the maritime industry.
Pros
Another class notation for the vessel.
Cons
Expensive with regular audits to verify continuous compliance and focus on upcoming cyber security threats.A rigid approach to compliance based on hardware standards rather than operational procedures.
Costs
Classification Society costs are opaque but typical compliance is usually in excess of USD $10,000.
Time frame to compliance
Depending on number and complexity of vessels but typically 3 to 6 months
